You can also search for particular documents or channels using Find, which will dynamically update your view as you Start typing:
On the left panel to search through your available channels:
Or near the top-right of the platform to search through the channel's contents:
You will still be able to search for documents once they have passed the retention period, but you will not be able to access these files.
